This week in Homegrown Science camp, we visited lots of cool places unique to Austin. Today, we grabbed our gardening hoes and gloves and set out, our destination – Alamo Community Garden. We took a tour of the plots and learned all about organic gardening. What exactly is organic gardening? Well I’m glad you asked! Organic gardening is a completely natural way to garden. It doesn’t involve nasty chemicals or weed killing sprays.
We learned all about the fruits, vegetables and herbs growing there and met many tiny creatures and insects along the way, some good, some bad. From strawberries to yellow-pear-tomatoes they had it all, and we all had our favorites, watermelon, grapefruit, potatoes. What’s your favorite and how does it grow?
We picked out a nice plot of dirt and got to work planting our own black-eyed-peas. We were careful to space out our seeds to allow room for growth and covered them with moist soil. We watered our seeds when we were finished and found out they would be growing within a week!
