Our exhibit En mi Familia -In my family, features the paintings, ideas, and experiences of Carmen Lomas Garza. Growing up in South Texas, her family always got together for Easter to make Cascarones (confetti eggs). As for many families, it is a time for celebration and festive fun. This family tradition inspired her to paint Cascarones (1989).
When I was little, my whole family would get together to make cascarones. We would dye eggshells, paint them with bright colors and then fill them with confetti. My creations didn’t last very long because right when I finished, I turned around and cracked them over my uncle’s head! Want to join in on the fun? Here’s how to make your own:
Materials: Dozen eggs, bowl, egg dying kit or paint & brushes, confetti, glue, tissue paper
- Tap the end of an egg gently on bowl and peel out a 1/2 ” hole. Let the egg contents flow empty into the bowl.

Rinse out the egg with water and let it dry out upside down. Be very careful, the egg is fragile!

Once it is dry, you can either use an egg dying kit to color the eggs, or you can paint on your own designs.

Carefully fill the egg with confetti and put a thin strip of glue around the edge of the opening.

Cut a piece of colored tissue paper that is a little bigger than the size of the hole in the egg, and press it over the opening.

Now you have beautiful cascarones to hide in the yard and hunt for, or crack over your friend’s heads. (Never crack an egg ON someone’s head, that will hurt!)
